County Championship D1, The Brit Oval, day one (stumps): Surrey 441-7 v GlamorganLive ball-by-ball commentary available on this website from BBC London
Scott Newman and Ali Brown hit tons against Glamorgan to help Surrey shake off their recent poor form.
Newman survived Surrey's early sputter to 25-2 to strike 117 with 21 fours before he was bowled by Robert Croft.
And Brown picked up the burden, his 122 occupying just 116 balls with 21 fours and two sixes, to take Surrey, who won the toss to 441-7.
David Harrison had caused early consternation and his third wicket was James Benning for 57.
But Newman and Brown turned things in their side's favour and the former afterwards paid tribute to his free-scoring team-mate.
"Ali Brown is a superb shot-maker and in situations like that he can score very quickly. He did it again, and that was the reason we finished in such a good
position," said Newman.
The match was shorn of international glamour, with four players ruled out through injury.
Surrey veteran Graham Thorpe's back spasms are not thought to be serious but Simon Jones missed his secodn successive Championship match with a back problem of his own.
Alex Wharf and Aussie opener Matthew Elliott are both suffering side strains.
And after Glamorgan were further depleted when seamer Darren Thomas pulled up during the morning with a groin injury.
"It is hard when one of your bowlers breaks down, but we had to make sure we cashed in," Newman commented.
"I thought they used the bowling they had left very well, and the two
spinners did not make it easy for us by bowling tight lines even though there
was not much in the pitch for them."
