Glamorgan's Simon Jones bounced back with a five wicket haul to keep Somerset within reach at Taunton. Jones, whose first six overs cost 46 on day one, claimed 5-48 on day two as Somerset were bowled out for 394 - a lead of 132 on first innings.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting (117) hit his second century in as many matches and Ian Blackwell hit 98.
Glamorgan openers Mark Wallace (53) and Matthew Elliott (43) had closed the gap to 35 by stumps, reaching 97-0.
England bowling coach Troy Cooley was on hand to witness Jones' return to form, with the third Test squad to be announced on Sunday.
Somerset failed to capitalise fully on a fine partnership of 210 for the second wicket between Ponting and Peter Bowler, losing five wickets for 50 runs either side of lunch.
Blackwell, who was ninth out, has now hit 50 or more in seven of his 10 Championship innings this season.
