County Championship D1, The Oval, day two: Lancashire 599 v Surrey (close)
Stuart Law's century was his 57th in first-class cricket |
Surrey staged a fightback with the ball after first day centurions Stuart Law and Mal Loye extended their partnership to 282. Leg-spinner Ian Salisbury picked up 4-116, but it was Rikki Clarke who achieved the most important successes for the reigning champions.
He had Loye lbw for 126 and bowled Law shortly afterwards for 169 after the overnight pair had added 60 to their side's overnight score of 391-2.
Andrew Flintoff hit two sixes and six fours in his 43 off 39 balls, adding 63 for the fifth wicket with Glenn Chapple (32) before edging a ball from Salisbury to Jonathan Batty.
Surrey are the sort of team you cannot afford of give a chink of light to Lancs coach Mike Watkinson |
Only 47 overs of play were possible in the day due to bad light and Lancashire's innings finally came to an end after an extended interval when Tim Murtagh bowled skipper Warren Hegg for 14.
Jimmy Anderson was left on three not out but the England seam bowler was prevented from trying to make inroads into Surrey's top order as the light closed in again.
