| Wednesday, 13 November, 2002, 11:38 GMT Twenty20 format unveiled ![]() Twenty20 promises to produce colourful cricket The Twenty20 Cup, English cricket's new 20-over-a-side competition starting in June 2003, will see severe penalties imposed for time-wasting.
All groups matches will start at 5.30pm and will be played in a 12-day period between 13 and 24 June, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) revealed on Wednesday. Teams will play each other in three zonal groups before progressing to semi-finals and a final, all three matches at Lord's on 19 July. There will be no "golden over," which would have seen batsmen scoring double in one designated over.
But each incoming batsman will have just 90 seconds to be ready to receive the next ball following a wicket, otherwise he will be timed out. Teams have just 75 minutes to bowl their 20 overs, or face a six-run penalty per over unbowled in that time. Bowlers have a maximum of five overs each and white Kookaburra balls will be used.
A spokesman for the ECB said that Twenty20 would not be seeking the backing of a single company to support the competion. "We are looking for a family of sponsors rather than a headline sponsor," he said. "It would be more like a Champions League-style of sponsorship." The BBC is likely to be involved in providing live audio commentary from some of the games. | See also: 13 Nov 02 | Statistics 13 Nov 02 | Counties 12 Aug 02 | Cricket 14 Apr 02 | Counties 11 Apr 02 | Counties Top Counties stories now: Links to more Counties stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
