Sabres slash desperate Durham
Somerset celebrate
Somerset were given a rare reason to smile
Norwich Union League D1, Taunton: Somerset 254-6 (45 overs) beat Durham 79 all out (21.2 overs) by 175 runs
Points: Somerset 4, Durham 0

Somerset's disappointing season ended on a positive note with an easy 175-run win over Durham at Taunton.

Relegated in the Championship and the National League, the beaten C&G Trophy finalists enjoyed a day out against another side in the doldrums.

Durham, who finished bottom in the Championship's lower division, will join Somerset in Division Two of this competition next year.

On the evidence of this, where they were bowled out for a paltry 79 in pursuit of 255, they have much work to do in the off-season.

After winning the toss Somerset were led by Matthew Wood (88 not out) as they set their guests a challenging target.

Instrumental

Wood was instrumental in getting Somerset's innings back on track after Steve Harmison reduced them to 27 for two early on.

He struck eight fours and a six in a fine knock, forming partnerships of 53 with Michael Burns (54 off 42 balls) and 84 with Keith Parsons (40 off 48) along the way.

Durham's reply got off to a fair start, with Aussie number three Brad Hodge playing well to guide them to 53 for two.

But the wheels completely fell off when Matt Bulbeck picked him off for 27, caught by Parsons.

Durham lost their last seven wickets for just 25 runs with none of the bottom eight batsmen making double-figure scores.

Indeed, after Hodge extras was the next best performer with 15 runs.
