Chilton canes Crusaders
Chris Schofield
Schofield eventually fell, but his knock was helpful
Norwich Union League D1, Shenley: Middlesex 198-5 (45 overs) lost to Lancashire 199-4 (40.4 overs) by six wickets
Points: Lancashire 4, Middlesex 0

Lancashire Lightning inflicted the ninth defeat of the season on basement dwellers Middlesex Crusaders at Shenley.

Mark Chilton scored an unbeaten 84 and Chris Schofield also scored a half-century as the visitors surpassed Middlesex's 198 for five with more than four overs to spare.

Earlier, Nick Compton and Ben Hutton revived memories of their famous grandfathers as their unbeaten sixth-wicket stand of 142 rescued the hosts.

Compton, grandson of Middlesex and England legend Denis, finished on 86 not out while Hutton, grandson of ex-Yorkshire and England star Sir Len, smashed 71 not out.

They came together with their side in the perilous position of 56 for five.

Skipper Sven Koenig made just two runs before Schofield took a sharp catch at backward point off John Wood.

Paul Weekes scored one off 18 before Kyle Hogg found an edge which Warren Hegg pouched behind the stumps.

And Robin Weston went next over for 21, caught at square leg by Tim Rees off James Anderson.

Anderson then turned catcher to get rid of Ed Joyce for three, but Compton remained calm and set about building a decent score.

But Anderson soon picked up his second wicket, catching Jamie Dalrymple (five) on his crease and getting the lbw decision.

Hutton came to join Compton, and the pair started their partnership looking to rotate the strike and put pressure on the Lancashire fielders.

But as they approached the last 10 overs both opened up and started to attack the bowling.

Hutton smashed Schofield for a huge six before sweeping the next ball for four, while Compton clipped Glen Chapple for successive fours before pulling Wood for six.

Lancashire's reply got off to a sticky start as Tim Bloomfield removed David Byas and Stuart Law inside the first 10 overs.

However, Schofield and Chilton came together and set about knocking off the required runs.

Schofield took 14 runs off a Dalrymple over, and hit three successive fours off Weekes before bringing up his 50 with a pull for four off Chad Keegan.

Two balls later Schofield was out, Cook inducing an edge to 'keeper David Alleyne, but his partnership with Chilton of 99 put Lancashire in a winning position they did not surrender.
