Chapple demolishes Derbyshire
Andrew Flintoff
Flintoff was one of four bowlers to take two wickets
C&G Trophy: Third round, Old Trafford: Lancashire 169-0 (28.1 overs) beat Derbyshire 167 all out (46.2 overs) by 10 wickets

Lancashire became the first team in the hat for the fourth round draw with an efficient demolition of Derbyshire.

After restricting the visitors to 167 all out through a highly-disciplined bowling performance, the task for Lancashire's batsman was a simple one.

And although David Byas was forced to retire hurt for just five, Mike Chilton and Glenn Chapple were both hit fifties to complete the task with ease.

Chapple's 81 runs came off just 69 balls, with 11 fours.

Earlier, Dom Hewson stood alone with a half-century amid a very moderate batting display by Derbyshire.

The visitors will claim it was a crucial toss to lose with rain delaying the start of play, but Hewson showed what could be done to contribute 63.

The signs were ominous from the outset, with Andrew Gait going in the first over for a duck after Peter Martin, one of four home bowlers to take two wickets, trapped the opener in front.

Martin struck again to remove Michael Di Venuto for 10, and the rot fully set in when Matthew Dowman's dismissal, caught off the bowling of Andrew Flintoff, sparked a crash that saw Derbyshire go from 36 for two to 39 for six.

Wicket-keeper Luke Sutton then played a vital supporting role to share in a 64-run stand with Hewson.

Though he contributed just 14 before being stumped off Chris Schofield, he lingered for 45 deliveries and was pivotal in Hewson reaching his third limited-overs fifty.

The end looked nigh when Hewson was dismissed by Flintoff with the score on 107 for eight, but firey late knocks from Graeme Welch and Mohammad Ali bolstered Derbyshire's offering.

Welch was unbeaten on 31 (off 28 balls) when Ali was run out for 19 in the 47th over, having faced 23 deliveries.
