Bell shows England credentials
Ian Bell
Bell gave the England selectors a timely nudge
B&H Cup quarter-final, Hove: Warwickshire 197-6 (48.4 overs) beat Sussex 196-7 by four wickets

Ian Bell did no harm to his England hopes with a mature innings in Warwickshire's four-wicket B&H Cup quarter-final victory over Sussex.

The win set up a semi-final meeting with Lancashire at Old Trafford, but Bell has more immediate concerns, with the England selectors naming their second Test squad on Saturday.

Coming to the wicket with his side six for two, Bell hit an unbeaten 85 from 133 deliveries, with just five boundaries, to lead the Bears home with eight balls remaining.

His colleagues were not so level-headed, though; Nick Knight became a third early victim for Robin Martin-Jenkins, following Michael Powell and Shaun Pollock back to the pavilion for four.

And Mike Yardy cut into the middle order, dismissing Dominic Ostler, Trevor penney and Dougie Brown before any of them could settle.

But former skipper Neil Smith was on hand to join Bell in a seventh-wicket stand of 48 to surpass a disappointing Sussex score of 196 for seven.

The hosts had their wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Ambrose to thank after his 87 led the hosts to a face-saving 196 for seven.

Richard Montgomerie hit a half-century, joining his 19-year-old team-mate in an opening stand of 99.

Opener Ambrose hit 87 for Sussex
Spinner Ashley Giles took wickets in successive deliveries, Montgomerie bowled looking to drive a good length delivery and Murray Goodwin caught behind by Tony Frost.

But Ambrose kept things ticking over on his way to a hard-working 98-ball 50 which contained only three fours.

When Tony Cottey was run out backing up at the non-striker's end Sussex knew their luck was out.

Ambrose stood firm until he skied Alan Richardson for a return catch in the penultimate over.

With new batsmen struggling to locate the line, the usual last-10 clatter was not on.

And Sussex added only 53 for the loss of another three wickets between the 40 and 50-over mark.

Sussex: R R Montgomerie, T R Ambrose (Wkt), B Zuiderent M W Goodwin, P A Cottey, R S C Martin-Jenkins, M H Yardy, W J House, M J G Davis, R J Kirtley (Capt), B V Taylor.

Warwickshire: M J Powell (Capt), N V Knight, S M Pollock, I R Bell, D P Ostler, D R Brown, A F Giles, N M K Smith, T Frost (Wkt), A Richardson, T L Penney.
