One-day specialists Gloucestershire produced a strangely subdued performance in a match played over two days due to bad weather. And the visitors cruised to an eight-wicket win with 8.2 overs to spare. Play eventually got underway at 1530 BST on Wednesday's reserve day, following another lengthy delay due to rain. Gloucestershire added 10 more runs to their overnight 193 for seven but lost a wicket in the process when Mark Hardinges was clean bowled by Kabir Ali. James Averis finished on seven not out while Jon Lewis was unbeaten on one. Home captain Mark Alleyne admitted after the first day's play he felt his side were 20 runs short of what would be a testing total. And Worcestershire obviously felt the same, making a confident start, but they had to wait until the sixth over to register their first boundary. An opening stand of 74 came to an end when Anurag Singh was undone by a clever piece of bowling by left-arm seamer Mike Smith, bowling over the wicket. But that brought Graeme Hick to the wicket and immediately he forged a good understanding with Bichel. The Worcestershire skipper eventually perished for 66 - caught by Smith in the deep off Lewis - but Bichel then smashed the winning runs. Gloucestershire struggled to 193 for seven on Tuesday having been put in to bat. Half-centuries from Kim Barnett and Mark Alleyne buoyed the home side after the loss of early wickets, but both fell in quick succession as Worcestershire wrestled back the initiative. A sodden outfield made scoring boundaries difficult for the Gloucestershire batsmen. And their problems were compounded by the Worcestershire bowlers who adopted a tight line and length, which brought three early wickets.
Bichel troubled the batsmen in his first spell and could have had Barnett for 10 when he found some extra lift to get the outside edge but Hick missed a sharp chance at slip. Worcestershire did not have to wait long for their second wicket with Hick making up for his miss by holding onto an edge off Matt Windows in the gully to give Alamgir Sheriyar a wicket. Veteran bowler Stuart Lampitt reduced Gloucestershire to 49 for three when Jeremy Snape drove loosely and was pouched in the gully by an alert Hick. Alleyne and Barnett used their experience to put on 90, both collecting half centuries, but when both were out the home side had to rebuild again. Hardinges went some way to making up for running out Alleyne by striking four fours in an unbeaten 29 before rain cut the first day short.
