B&H Cup, Bristol: Gloucestershire 270-7 beat Somerset 231 all out (45.5 overs) by 39 runs

One-day specialists Gloucestershire have ensured themselves of a home tie in the Cup quarter-finals.

A fine all-round batting effort, and more brilliant bowling from Ian Harvey, who took five for 20, saw them secure a 39-run victory over Somerset, who are out of the tournament.

Kim Barnett, playing his 107th Cup match at the grand old age of 41, hit 67, opening the Gloucestershire innings with the aggressive New Zealander Craig Spearman.

Spearman hit a quick 20, before Harvey provided more acceleration for the home side.

Simon Francis had the Australian brilliantly caught behind by Rob Turner for 24 off an under-edged cut and Chris Taylor went to a fine catch in the deep by Jamie Cox.

Alleyne's charge

At 176 for five, Mark Alleyne responded to the challenge - often hitting inside out through the covers to put on 59 with Barnett, who was eventually bowled trying to hit Ian Blackwell across the line.

Alleyne went on to make 47 while England off-spinners Jeremy Snape and Martyn Ball added an entertaining 45 in rapid time.

Ball finished with an impressive 37 off just 20 balls.

Chasing a massive target of 271 on a pitch offering some assistance to all types of bowling, Somerset's run chase predictably ended in vain.

Keith Parsons topscored with 61 but the asking rate rose all the time.

And though Rob Turner and Keith Dutch collected 10 boundaries between them in a gutsy seventh-wicket partnership, it was too little too late.
