Gloucs maintain winning form
David Hemp
Hemp was alone in making an impact for Glamorgan
B&H Cup, Cardiff: Gloucestershire 173-2 beat Glamorgan 171-8 by 8 wickets

All-rounder Ian Harvey produced another superb performance as Gloucestershire made it three wins out of three.

The Australian took three for 32 and then made an unbeaten 29 off 24 balls as the visitors, Cup winners in 1977, 1999 and 2000, passed their target with 21 overs to spare.

David Hemp's 62 was the only bright spot of the Glamorgan innings, and Matthew Maynard was forced to retire hurt with just a single to his name after suffering a blow on his hand.

Maynard will be out of action for six to eight weeks after an X-ray revealed that the middle-order batsman had broken a bone.

Gloucestershire's run chase became a near formality after Craig Spearman struck 12 boundaries in making 73 off 59 deliveries.

Double blow

Glamorgan skipper Steve James opted to bat first after winning the toss but soon had cause to rue his decision as Keith Newell went to Jonathan Lewis for nine and Robert Croft was caught behind for four.

Hemp hit a six and five fours in his two-hour innings but when he was caught off Mark Alkleyne, Glamorgan were in trouble on 124 for five.

Adrian Dale (27) and Michael Kasprowicz (19) made useful runs but wickets continued to fall consistently as Harvey worked his way through the tail, with Dean Cosker bowled for six by the final ball of the innings.

Glamorgan's hopes faded as Spearman and Kim Barnett launched Gloucestershire's reply with a stand of 109.

Darren Thomas had to leave the field due to injury after sending down 3.5 overs for 32 and Simon Jones was equally expensive, conceding 28 from his three.

Barnett was eventually caught by Hemp off Cosker for 29 and Spearman was bowled by Croft soon after, but Harvey and Chris Taylor (29 not out) saw the visitors hom with an unbroken partnership of 56.
