Harmison cleared to play
Steve Harmison
Harmison took nine wickets in Dhaka but missed the second Test
Steve Harmison looks set to be fit enough to rejoin England's squad for the Test series in Sri Lanka after a back scan showed no serious damage.

The fast bowler suffered the injury after his man-of-the-match performance in the opening Test against Bangladesh.

But a scan on Monday showed he had only muscular damage and is therefore on course to make his return in December.

"Scans suggest there is no serious cause for the pain Steve felt," said ECB medical officer Dr Peter Gregory.

"Steve will continue to undergo treatment and strengthening work for his back at the ECB National Academy, and I am very optimistic he will rejoin the England Test squad in Sri Lanka."

The three-Test series with Sri Lanka begins in Galle on 2 December.

Harmison's return from injury could dash Richard Johnson's hopes of retaining his place in the Test squad.

Johnson took nine wickets in Chittagong as England wrapped up the Test series against Bangladesh 2-0.

But he is regarded as a one-day specialist and only made the Test squad because of a short-term injury to James Anderson.
