Lillee believes Vaughan is under too much pressure |
Australia Test legend Dennis Lillee says Michael Vaughan was made England captain too soon. Vaughan, 28, set Australia alight a year ago, his three centuries in five Ashes Tests taking him top of the world batting rankings.
But since taking over as skipper from Nasser Hussain in July he has passed 50 just once in 19 innings.
"I would have let him go a a year or two before throwing him the captaincy," Lillee told BBC Radio Five Live.
"He's a very, very good player - one of the top England players I've ever seen - but I laughed when they threw the captaincy on his head.
"It seems too much pressure at this stage."
Vaughan's latest failure came against Bangladesh A on Friday, when he was dismissed third ball in the final warm-up match before the first Test.
"Maybe it's the newness of it all and the pressure of it all and maybe he'll come through it all," said Lillee, who gained 70 Test caps. "In Australia we pick the best player as captain and I think that's the way to go if he is a good captain.
"If they've picked [Vaughan] because he's the best player but not the best captain then that's a mistake."
