Pathan's hundred was his first in 41 ODIs |
Yusuf Pathan struck a majestic unbeaten hundred as India beat New Zealand by five wickets in the fourth one-day international in Bangalore. James Franklin hit 98 not out from 69 balls as the visitors made 315-7, with Pathan taking 3-49 with the ball. In reply, India were reduced to 188-5 before Pathan came to the crease and made 123 from 96 balls, hitting the winning six with seven balls to spare. The hosts lead the series 4-0 with the last game in Chennai on Friday. New Zealand came out all guns blazing in the dead rubber, with Martin Guptill (30) and Brendon McCullum (42) putting on a quick-fire 62-run stand. Ashish Nehra broke the partnership, with Guptill caught at cover and Jamie How (four) at first slip, while McCullum found the hands of Rohit Sharma off Ravichandran Ashwin. Ross Taylor (44) and Scott Styris (46) took the total past 150, but the latter's big heave off Pathan only went to Saurabh Tiwary at deep mid-wicket, whereas Taylor became Ashwin's second victim, trapped leg before wicket in the 38th over. Pathan bowled Daniel Vettori and Kyle Mills for 17 and one respectively, but Franklin exploded down the stretch, rattling off 12 fours and three sixes to give the Black Caps hope. India opener Parthiv Patel struck five quick boundaries in a 67-run opening stand with Gautam Gambhir before Andy McKay snared Gambhir for 27 and Virat Kohli three deliveries later for nought. Yuvraj Singh failed to build on his start, caught at short mid-wicket trying to pull Nathan McCullum, and in his next over the spinner snapped up Parthiv for 53, caught brilliantly at long off by substitute Kane Williamson. Pathan then helped steady the innings alongside Sharma, the duo putting on 80 for the fifth wicket, before Sharma fell to Tim Southee for 44. A brief rain interruption did not dampen Pathan's mood, however, and he took 21 runs off a Mills over, followed by a six in the next that brought up his hundred. With the asking rate now looking attainable, Pathan and Tiwary steadily steered their partnership past the century mark, and the latter wrapped up proceedings in the penultimate over, fittingly with a six.
