Smith will recover in time for the home series against India

South Africa captain Graeme Smith will be fit for the first test against India on 16 December.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that Smith, who fractured a finger in a one-day game against Pakistan, will recover in time for the home series.

Smith has visited a hand surgeon and the CSA said it has been assured that the 29-year-old's injury is healing "within expectation".

The Proteas take on top-ranked India in three tests, five ODIs and a T20 game.

The CSA added that Smith's finger is to be assessed again in two weeks.

South Africa are due to gather on 12 December to prepare for the meeting of the world's top two Test teams.

The skipper sustained a recurrence of the same injury he suffered in the first of the five one-day matches of the tour of Pakistan held in the United Arab Emirates.
