Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers both hit tons as South Africa recovered from a poor start to take control on day one of the second Test against Pakistan.

Debutant paceman Tanvir Ahmed (4-67) had the Proteas' top order reeling early on as they slipped to 33-3.

But Kallis (105) and de Villiers (120 not out) more than steadied the ship in a terrific stand of 179 in Abu Dhabi.

South Africa closed day one on 311-5 as they look for victory in the two-match series following a drawn first Test.

It was a second successive century for Kallis, following his 135 in the first Test, and the 10th century partnership in 32 innings for the pair.

All that after such a bright start for Pakistan at the Shaikh Zayed stadium, with Tanvir making a superb impression on a long overdue international debut.

The much-publicised absence of Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir had allowed the 31-year-old an opportunity to come into the side, and he seized it with both hands.

Having won the toss and been thrown the ball by captain Misbah-ul-Haq, Tanvir removed Alviro Petersen (2) in his first over and Hashim Amla (4) in his second.

Graeme Smith (11) edged behind shortly after to hand the seamer his third wicket and suddenly South Africa were on the rack.

But in typically calm fashion, Kallis and de Villiers built a solid base before assuming total control of the bowling, with Kallis particularly brutal with anything wayward from Mohammad Sami.

Eventually Tanvir broke through Kallis' defences to claim his fourth wicket but South Africa already look well set, despite Ashwell Prince (32) falling in the final session.
