Pakistan struggled to come to terms with Morkel's pace and bounce

Morne Morkel took 5-54 as South Africa built a sizeable lead after three days of the Dubai Test against Pakistan.

South Africa were 139-2 in their second innings to lead by 271, after Pakistan had fallen away from an overnight 144-2 to be bowled out for just 248.

Morkel took the last four Pakistan wickets to fall in the day but the first three went to Johan Botha (3-61).

The in-form Hashim Amla was unbeaten on 44 at stumps with Jacques Kallis on 32, leaving Pakistan in a poor position.

Azhar Ali and Younus Khan raised their half-century stand from 155 deliveries early in the day, but once spin was introduced the pair found the going much tougher.

Younus (35) became the first victim of the day when he chipped Botha towards mid-wicket where AB de Villiers held on to a smart catch.

Misbah was in next - playing his first Test since January and with the extra burden of the captaincy - and he struggled throughout his 38-ball stay, making just nine before a fine catch from Amla at short leg ended his involvement.

Umar Akmal faced just five balls before departing with a wild slog taken at point and Pakistan were already on shaky ground at lunch, which came at 214-5.

Debutant Adnan Akmal was caught behind off Dale Steyn soon after the interval, leaving Morkel to wrap up the innings.

Morkel then removed number eight Abdur Rehman in the next over, before ending Ali's long vigil thanks to another short leg catch from Amla.

The last two men fell in no time to Morkel and South Africa were left with most of the day to bat in, and they acquitted themselves well.

Alviro Petersen was lbw just before tea to Rehman for 26, Graeme Smith (34) departing to Saeed Ajmal in similar fashion in the final session.

But Pakistan need an inspired performance on Monday's fourth day to get out of the hole they appear to be in.
