Second Test, Colombo (SSC) (day one): Sri Lanka 312-2 v India Match scorecard Paranavitana and Sangakkara put on 174 for the second wicket
Kumar Sangakkara and Tharanga Paranavitana both hit centuries as Sri Lanka made 312-2 on day one of the second Test against India in Colombo. After the hosts won the toss, Tillakaratne Dilshan made 54 before skipper Sangakkara (130 not out) and Paranavitana (100) took control. It was Sangakkara's 23rd Test hundred and Paranavitana's second. The duo both scored centuries to help Sri Lanka to a 10-wicket win in the first match of the three-Test series. Paranavitana and Dilshan put on 99 for the first wicket in 18 overs as Sri Lanka, playing their first Test since the retirement of star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, got off to a superb start. | We have a new attack, but I am sure the bowlers will be able to exploit the conditions |
Dilshan made 54 off 42 balls before he was caught off left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha. But Paranavitana and Sangakkara continued their confident form of the first Test, and both reached three figures within 10 overs of the start of the final session. Paranavitana was out for exactly 100 when he was bowled off the inside edge by Ishant Sharma to end a 174-run stand, but Sangakkara remained unbeaten and will resume his innings alongside former captain Mahela Jayawardene on Tuesday. India's bowlers will hope for better fortune after toiling in hot and humid weather on an easy-paced wicket. Young seamer Abhimanyu Mithun went for 0-75 in 17 overs and leading spinner Harbhajan Singh gave away 61 runs in 22 wicketless overs. "It is a good position to be in after day one," said Sangakkara. "We are looking to get 450-500 or even 550. | 606: DEBATE |
"Tharanga is playing better after getting his first century in the previous match and even though Dilshan missed out on a big score, his contribution at the top was vital. "We have a new attack, but I am sure the bowlers will be able to exploit the conditions. I think the spinners will get bounce as the game goes on." In a new-look bowling attack, Sri Lanka brought in Ajantha Fernando for Muralitharan, while Dilhara Fernando replaced the injured Lasith Malinga, debutant off-spinner Suraj Randiv took Rangana Herath's place and paceman Dammika Prasad came in for Chanaka Welegedara. India lost batsmen Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh because of injury and illness respectively, meaning call-ups for Test debutant Suresh Raina, a veteran of 98 one-day internationals, and opener Murali Vijay.
