Second Test, Mirpur, day one: Bangladesh 233 v India 69-0 Match scorecard
Mahmudullah ran out of partners and was left stranded on 96 not out |
Mohammad Mahmudullah hit an unbeaten 96 on the first day of the second Test but it was India's bowlers who dominated, dismissing Bangladesh for 233. Ishant Sharma (4-66) and Zaheer Khan (3-62) shared the opening wickets to restrict the home side to 44-4. Mohammad Ashraful (39), Shakib al Hasan (34) and Mushfiqur Rahim (30) offered hope, but Mahmudullah, who came in at 106-6, gave the score respectability. In reply, Virender Sehwag was unbeaten on 41 as India closed on 69-0. The opener hit six boundaries and was ably assisted by Gautam Gambhir who closed on 26 not out. But the day belonged to the tourists' bowlers who underlined India's ranking as number one Test nation with a devastating display on the opening day of the second and final Test. Sharma had Imrul Kayes caught by Mahendra Singh Dhoni with his first ball of the match, while in the third over Zaheer bowled Tamim Iqbal with a delivery that nipped back. Dhoni, who missed India's 113-run victory in the first Test through injury, took the second of his three catches to dismiss Junaid Siddique as Bangladesh stuttered to 13-3. | 606: DEBATE |
Ashraful contributed to his own downfall when he missed a big shot off spinner Pragyan Ojha and was stumped by Dhoni, while Shakib was caught behind chasing a delivery that was always going away from the batsman. But Mahmudullah was proving harder to dislodge and he put on 58 for the ninth wicket with Shafiul Islam, who contributed only nine. He was on 80 when number 11 Rubel Hossain joined him and sensing his chance of scoring his maiden Test century was slipping away, he promptly hit Harbhajan Singh for 11 in one over. But the Indian off-spinner had the final laugh, bowling Rubel to leave Mahmudullah stranded four short of his ton.
