Dilshan's 10th Test century was his fifth this year |
Tillakaratne Dilshan scored a century as Sri Lanka dominated day two of the first Test against India in Ahmedabad. The opener smashed 112, and although he fell to fast bowler Zaheer Khan in the final session, the visitors ended the day well-placed on 275-3. Mahela Jayawardene (36 not out) and Thilan Samaraweera (45 not out) were the unbeaten batsmen. Earlier, Rahul Dravid fell without adding to his overnight score of 177 as India were dismissed for 426. Dilshan's ton was his 10th in Tests and his fifth this year, and the first by a Sri Lankan in India since 1997. He featured in solid partnerships with fellow opener Tharanga Paranavitana (35) and captain Kumar Sangakkara (31) as the Indian attack found things tough-going on a placid pitch. | 606: DEBATE |
Zaheer had looked menacing with the new ball, but with little assistance from the wicket, Sri Lanka got off to a good start and Dilshan looked comfortable. Together with left-hander Paranavitana, Dilshan added 74 for the opening wicket at a brisk pace, effectively putting the pressure back on the home side. Ishant Sharma eventually broke that stand, forcing Paranavitana to fend at a delivery that moved away a touch, but Sangakkara quickly hit his stride. The two added 115 for the second wicket when Zaheer produced another fine burst to snare both batsmen. Dilshan mistimed a pull and presented Dravid with a simple catch at gully, before Sangakkara top-edged to Sachin Tendulkar at fine leg. That left Sri Lanka at 194-3, but Jayawardene and Samaraweera kept the visitors on track. In the morning session, spinner Muttiah Muralitharan finished with 3-97 as the home side were bowled out inside two hours. Muralitharan added the wickets of Harbhajan Singh and Ishant to his tally, while fast bowler Chanaka Welegedara removed Dravid in the third over of the day. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka paceman Thilan Thushara - injured in the warm-up before the game and replaced by Welegedara just before the toss - has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour because of a shoulder injury. He will be replaced by fellow quick bowler Dilhara Fernando, who should join the squad on Wednesday.
