Duminy's ton was the clear highlight of South Africa's innings |
JP Duminy warmed up for the first Twenty20 international against England with a maiden one-day ton as South Africa beat Zimbabwe by 212 runs. Duminy fired nine fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 111 from 87 deliveries as South Africa amassed 331-5. Graeme Smith hit his 40th one-day fifty and Jacques Kallis hit two sixes in his 74th fifty in an opening stand of 117. Tatenda Taibu hit seven fours in 52 but Albie Morkel struck twice in an over as South Africa sealed a 2-0 series win. Zimbabwe won the toss, but the only bowlers to stem a tide of runs from most of the South African batsmen were spinners Ray Price (3-55) and Prosper Utseya (2-53). The 20 overs provided by new-ball bowlers Christopher Mpofu and Kyle Jarvis cost a combined 151. Though AB de Villiers and Alviro Petersen both failed to contribute significantly it mattered not as Duminy, one of the most improved international batsmen of the last 12 months, combined brutal driving with delicate sweeps on a good batting track. He faced just 87 balls in all, and shared an unbeaten 58 off the final 33 balls of the innings with Mark Boucher (31 not out off 19). | 606: DEBATE |
The run chase, beginning under floodlights, started poorly. Both openers were out for ducks, edging to Kallis at slip to leave Zimbabwe 8-2. Morkel picked up the next three wickets to leave the scoreboard 62-5 as South Africa predictably outclassed their opponents, with only Taibu - a centurion in a losing cause in the previous match - holding up the Proteas. But when he fell to Charl Langeveldt for 52, Zimbabwe were in tatters at 95-8 and burly left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe wrapped things up with the final two wickets in consecutive overs to finish with 3-27, his best one-day figures to date. "I am hitting the ball quite nicely and hopefully I can take this form into the England series," said man-of-the match Duminy. The left-hander was troubled by shin splints and added: "The pain is there but it nothing to worry about."
