Third Test, Colombo, day one (close): Pakistan 289-7 v Sri Lanka Match scorecard
The 34-year-old Yousuf was seeking his 25th Test century |
Pakistan closed a fluctuating opening day of the dead rubber final Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on 289-7. Trailing 2-0 in the series, they were reduced to 36-2 as Thilan Thushara took two wickets in an over, before Khurram Manzoor and Mohammad Yousuf shared 167. But Manzoor was denied a maiden Test century by Chaminda Vaas in his final match, caught at first slip. Three overs later Yousuf was run out attempting to steal an overthrow and three late wickets fell in eight balls. Seeking to complete a clean sweep, Sri Lanka chose to field first in overcast conditions. They had to wait for almost an hour to make the first breakthrough, but only two balls for the second. Fawad Alam edged one through to the keeper and skipper Younus Khan, having drive his first ball confidently for two, dragged an attempted cut back on to the stumps. Manzoor and Yousuf adopted a risk-free approach to guide their team to lunch with no further alarms, and the slow scoring continued into the afternoon session. In his fifth Test, Manzoor recorded his second fifty with consecutive boundaries off Thushara, while Yousuf notched his 29th with a couple of runs through the covers. Yousuf edged one through the slips on 57 but then came the slide, culminating in Umar Gul dragging one back on to the timbers to give the Sri Lankans a seventh wicket.
