Ray Illingworth's England won a tough and controversial series in Australia 2-0. It's no exaggeration to say it was the most hostile Ashes series since Bodyline, nearly 40 years earlier.
The flashpoint came in the vital Seventh and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which England won by 62 runs to clinch the series. England fast bowler John Snow was grabbed by a member of the crowd, incensed by a bouncer which had felled tailender Terry Jenner. He wasn't the only one - dozens of beer cans were thrown on to the outfield as the hostile atmosphere intensified.
Illingworth took his team off the field in protest, but returned after the umpires warned that the match could be awarded to Australia.
