England were tipped to keep hold of the Ashes at the start of the summer but Australia dominated totally after being inserted by David Gower at Headingley in the opening Test.

Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh both contributed centuries to Australia's first-innings total of 601-7 in Leeds, establishing early on what proved to be an unstoppable momentum for the visitors.

A bumper haul of 41 wickets throughout the series for Terry Alderman - including 19 lbw decisions - made captain Allan Border's job considerably easier and by the time England had succumbed to a third defeat in the fourth Test in Manchester, the Ashes were back in Australia's possession.
