SECOND TEST, Mirpur (day one): Bangladesh v New Zealand Dates: 25-29 October Start time: 0430 BST each day Match scorecard
Persistent rain washed out the entire day's play |
The first day of the second and final Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand was washed out at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday. Play is scheduled to start at 0300 GMT on Sunday with a 30 minute extension added to the remaining four days to make up for some of the lost time. New Zealand lead the two-match series 1-0 after a three-wicket victory in the opening match in Chittagong. Grant Elliott replaces fellow Kiwi all-rounder Jacob Oram, who is injured. A back problem meant Oram, 30, could bowl only eight overs in the second innings of the Test which New Zealand won by three wickets. Team manager Lindsay Crocker said: "He has a history of back problems so the people who know his injury and have dealt with it will assess him again." The Kiwis are hopeful Oram will return for the tour of Australia in two weeks. | 606: DEBATE | Bangladesh looked set to win their first Test match against a major cricketing nation before New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori scored 76 runs to steer the visitors to their target of 317 with three wickets to spare. And Tigers skipper Mohammad Ashraful says they will be targeting Vettori as they look to add to their solitary Test victory, which came against Zimbabwe, in their 55th Test. "He (Vettori) was the difference in the first Test and we will have to find ways to get him early," said Ashraful. "We still have a lot of positives from the first Test as we bowled and batted well but couldn't finish it off. "We have the talent to win the second Test. The pitch will support our bowlers." New Zealand coach John Bracewell is wary of Bangladesh's approach and his side's weakness after coming close to a historic defeat in Chittagong. He said: "They may have seen it as an opportunity lost, not an opportunity that's going to destroy them. They may say 'we're getting close' and take the optimistic line. "Vettori needs more support and it's something we're working through, getting experience into the other bowlers, trying to build their skills."
