Shakib turns screw on New Zealand

First Test, Chittagong, day three (close):
Bangladesh 245 & 184-8 v New Zealand 171

Shakib followed up his exploits with the ball with a fine innings

Shakib Al Hasan kept up his fine form as Bangladesh gained the upper hand on New Zealand on day three in Chittagong.

Having weighed in with figures of 7-36 as New Zealand were all out for 171, he then added 71 with the bat as they closed on 184-8, a lead of 258 runs.

The Kiwis face an uphill task to avoid defeat, having never successfully chased more than 200 in an away Test.

And five of their top six batsmen are playing for the first time on a sub-continent pitch.

New Zealand added just 16 to their overnight total of 155-9 before Shakib dismissed Iain O'Brien for five, to claim the best figures ever by a Bangladesh Test bowler, and condemn the visitors to their lowest ever total against Bangladesh.

When the home side began their second innings, Jeetan Patel and Daniel Vettori made immediate inroads for New Zealand.

606: DEBATE

Zunaed Siddique, Rajin Saleh, captain Mohammad Ashraful and Mehrab Hossain could only conjure up 18 runs between the four of them, and they all fell before tea.

Tamim Iqbal added 33 before he was out, taking the score to 71-5, and bringing Shakib to the crease.

Along with Mushfiqur Rahim, he put on 56 for the sixth wicket to ensure Bangladesh retained the upper hand.

Shakib then combined with Naeem Islam to take the score to 175 before he was caught by Ross Taylor at slip off the bowling of Vettori.

Naeem then became Vettori's fourth victim of the innings, lbw for 19, with Mashrafe Mortaza and Abdur Razzak unbeaten at stumps.
