Gayle had too much class for the hosts as the Windies romped to victory |
Captain Chris Gayle smashed a brilliant 110 not out off 77 balls as West Indies beat Canada by seven wickets in the tri-series final in King City, Ontario. Gayle hit six sixes and 14 fours in his 16th one-day century as West Indies reached 181-3 in the 28th over. "The plan was to bat as long as possible without putting any pressure on myself. The plan worked," he said. Canada could only muster 179 in their innings despite Rizwan Cheema's 61 as paceman Jerome Taylor took 3-33. The hosts made the worst possible start when Mohammad Iqbal was run out by Sewnarine Chattergoon from the opening ball of the game. But Cheema followed up his 89 in the previous game between the teams two days earlier with three sixes and eight fours in his 45-ball knock, which saw him take 21 off a single over from Daren Powell. Fast bowler Powell eventually took revenge with the help of sub Kemar Roach's catch and the scoring rate then ground to a halt with just 59 coming from 20 overs before they were all out in the 47th. Canada's total never look enough as Gayle and Chattergoon (23) began the reply with a stand of 88 in 13 overs and Carlton Baugh contributed 29 to help his captain bring the match to an early conclusion.
