Cornwall beaten by nine wickets

Cricket

Cornwall slumped to a nine-wicket defeat to Berkshire in their opening Minor Counties Championship match after a poor second innings showing.

Cornwall, who made 225 in their first innings, were bowled out for 131 after dismissing their opponents for 305.

Opener Ben Smeeth, who carried his bat through the first innings, went for a duck in the second as only Matt Robins (42) really troubled the scorers.

Berkshire easily made their target of 52 in just over 12 overs.

Cornwall had looked to be on the brink of winning a game they should have lost after reducing Berkshire to 116-4 in their first innings.

But James Morris hit 93 for the Royal County as they moved onto a total of 305 all out.

The Cornish had earlier recovered well from a first innings score of 57-5 to rally to 225 all out.

Cornwall's next game is against Shropshire at Truro on Sunday, 22 June.
