Shifnal suffer first-day defeat

Graham Putland hit 31 and James Ralph 22, but could not prevent Shifnal from losing their opening game in the Birmingham League premier division.

Johnno Whitney took three wickets as Barnt Green made 187-8, but Shifnal were then bowled out for just 85.

In Division One, relegated Wellington drew with Coventry, despite Steve Lamb hitting 54 and Gavin Byram 47 in their 160 for eight.

But Coventry, the team who came down with them, ended on 127 for eight.

Shrewsbury suffered an 111-run home defeat to Old Hill being bowled out for 103 in response to the visitors' 214 for three.

In Division Two, Newport and St. George's both lost. And, in Division Three, Bridgnorth beat Whitchurch by 68 runs in the Shropshire derby.

Bridgnorth made 140, but Whitchurch could only muster 72.

Oswestry - promoted from the Shropshire League - fell by four wickets at Coleshill on their Birmingham League debut.

An impressive 128 from Warrick Fynn saw Oswestry to 220, but their hosts replied with 222-6 with just an over to spare.
