Herefordshire County Cricket Club's new chairman Malcolm Morgan hopes that there will be a bright future for Minor Counties clubs. Morgan told BBC Hereford & Worcester talks have taken place about revamping the format for the 2010 season. "There are one or two exciting possibilities in the pipeline, such as a Twenty20 competition with the major counties," he said. "If that comes to fruition, it would be really good for us." Morgan has stressed that the proposals are only in the early discussion stages. He added that the Twenty20 proposal was only one suggestion put forward at a recent meeting between the Minor Counties and the ECB's Mike Gatting. The Twenty20 proposal would be welcomed by the Minor Counties as it would provide them with a much-needed income stream to replace the money lost from being excluded from the C&G Trophy. | It was a very frank and open meeting, so hopefully some positive things will come out of that. |
"Mike Gatting is in charge of trying to bring forward a few initiatives to try and bring grass-roots cricket up a notch," said Morgan. "There are some good ideas and some we think that aren't quite so good but these will all come out in the wash in the next 12 months or so." Morgan feels the discussions between the ECB and the Minor Counties are a positive step forward. "Lots of ideas were put forward by the Minor Counties and it was a very frank and open meeting so hopefully some positive things will come out of that." Herefordshire will open their competitive season with an MCCA Trophy group match against Berkshire at Henley-on-Thames on Sunday 27 April.
