Maunders leads Shrops title hunt

John Maunders
Maunders was released by Leicestershire last season

Shropshire have signed John Maunders as this season's cricket professional.

The all-rounder was released by Leicestershire at the end of last season but Shropshire feel he is a coup signing with a lot to offer.

"He's a big hitter who wants to open the batting for us, and he can bowl too," chairman of selectors Trevor Sheperd told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We've been so close to the Minor Counties title in recent years, and perhaps Maunders can take us there."

Maunders, who will be 27 in April, played for England in the Under-19 World Cup in 2000. He spent four years at Middlesex before moving to Leicester.

"He still feels he can make it in the first-class game and I wouldn't be surprised if he attracts some offers. If so, we wouldn't stand in his way," added Sheperd.

Andy Gray will stay with the Shropshire squad this year, despite moving from Shifnal, while bowler Ted Bayliss has told the county he'll be more available for games.
