Sri Lanka defy rain to beat India

Jayawardene and Dilshan celebrate
Jayawardene and Dilshan put on an unbroken 85 to seal victory
CB Series, game five, Canberra: Sri Lanka 154-2 (19/21 overs) beat India 195-5 (29/29 overs) by eight wickets (D/L method)

Tillakaratne Dilshan hit 62 to lead Sri Lanka to an eight-wicket victory over India in rain-hit Canberra - their first win in the one-day CB Series.

Sri Lanka reached their revised target of 154 with two overs to spare after reducing India to 195-5 from 29 overs.

Rohit Sharma again impressed for India, smashing his 70 off 64 deliveries after his team were asked to bat.

Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag put on 45 runs but both openers lost their wickets within five deliveries.

The result evened up the tri-series group table, with India on top on eight points, Australia on seven and Sri Lanka on six.

An early downpour delayed the start of play and the game was shortened again when further rain arrived during the break between innings.

After veteran opener Sanath Jayasuriya gave Sri Lanka a flying start with 27 from 13 balls they were always comfortably placed to reach their target.

Jayasuriya hit two massive sixes in one Sree Santh over that went for 23.

It was a nightmare match for the fiery Indian quick, who conceded 48 runs in only three overs and was also pulled for another six by Dilshan.

Although Ishant Sharma removed Jayasuriya, Dilshan guided his side safely to the target, putting on an unbroken 85 with captain Mahela Jayawardene (36 not out).

Only spinner Harbhajan Singh, who claimed Kumar Sangakkara with his first ball and finished with 1-15 from four overs, was able to trouble the Sri Lankan batsmen.

Winning the toss was a bit of an advantage on that wicket

Rohit Sharma's earlier display ended up being in vain, despite some some wonderfully inventive shots.

The 20-year-old struck one powerful six off Muttiah Muralitharan and faced just 64 balls, also hitting six boundaries.

Sharma and captain Mahendra Dhoni put on 68 in just 46 balls after coming together when Gautam Gambhir, who was also looking dangerous, was run out for 35.

  • Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene:
"We needed to show character. I thought the guys did show character and fought really well.

"Winning the toss was a bit of an advantage on that wicket earlier on.

"We managed to keep them to a decent score and the chase was well-calculated so credit to the guys for the way they handled themselves."

    India skipper Mahendra Dhoni:
"The kind of start they got I think was really amazing.

"There's nothing much you can do as a captain.

"It was really amazing to see Dilshan bat and the way he carried on with his innings. I think that was a key."
