Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan cashed in with four further wickets to finish with 6-28 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 131 on day two of the Kandy Test.
On another rain-hit day, the tourists failed to launch a recovery from their precarious overnight score of 72-4.
Muralitharan, playing in his home town, took his career tally to 694, just 14 short of Shane Warne's world record.
In reply, Sri Lanka reached 30-0 at stumps, with Michael Vandort unbeaten on 25 at the Asgiriya Stadium.
Left-armer Sujeewa de Silva took the first wicket of the day when Mahela Jayawardene held a straightforward slip catch off a loose drive from Tushar Imran.
Skipper Mohammad Ashraful was then caught behind off De Silva for 26, effectively ending any hopes of a reasonable score.
Muralitharan got stuck in with two caught-and-bowleds - the first a fine one-handed efforts - and then picked up numbers 10 and 11 for ducks via bat-pad catches.
