Sussex hang on to deny India win
Tour match, Hove, day four: Sussex 300-6d & 190-9 drew with India 388-7d & 184-8d

Robin Martin-Jenkins hit a gritty unbeaten 45 as Sussex hung on for a draw in India's tour match at Hove.

The hosts, set a target of 273 in a minimum of 55 overs, were staring defeat in the face on a parlous 123-7 despite Richard Montgomerie's 59.

Anil Kumble took 3-57, Shanthakumaran Sreesanth 2-47 and RP Singh 2-28 but Martin-Jenkins took his side to 190-9.

Singh (41) put on an unbroken 64 with Rahul Dravid (30) as India declared on 184-8 after collapsing embarrassingly.

Former England fast bowler James Kirtley was first to strike with his 600th first-class wicket, having Yuvraj Singh caught behind.

VVS Laxman drove former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq off the back foot and the ball ricocheted off Michael Thornely's shin pad at silly mid-off to wicket-keeper Andrew Hodd.

Medium-pacer Martin-Jenkins trapped Dinesh Karthik lbw and saw Gautam Gambhir top-edge an attempted cut to backward point, while Michael Yardy's left-arm spin removed Kumble and Sreesanth with successive balls in the first over after lunch to leave India in disarray.

But skipper Dravid, nursing a minor calf strain, batted with a runner for 22 overs to arrest the slide with Singh, who made a career-best score.

Sussex's run chase began poorly with Chris Nash caught at mid-on and Yardy getting a faint edge pushing forward.

Carl Hopkinson was well taken in the gully mistiming a drive off Ranadeb Bose and Kumble bowled Thornely and pinned Montgomerie in front in successive overs after tea as the hosts lost half their side for 106.

Sussex's plight worsened in deteriorating light with first-innings centurion Hodd run out before Singh bowled Ollie Rayner and Saqlain fell to Sreesanth.

However, last man Jason Lewry held firm with Martin-Jenkins in the final seven overs, the last of which Martin-Jenkins coolly played out from Kumble.

India next play England A at Chelmsford in a three-day game starting on Friday, their final warm-up for the first Test at Lord's on 19 July.
