First one-day international, Stormont:
South Africa 245-6 (49.3 ovs) bt India 242-8 (50 ovs) by four wickets Kallis hit 91 from 116 balls, with six fours |
Jacques Kallis struck an unbeaten 91 to guide South Africa to a four-wicket win over India in the first of three one-day internationals in Belfast.
Kallis saw his team home with just three balls to spare, in pursuit of an India total of 242-8.
Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar was run out on 99, Rahul Dravid struck 74, while Andre Nel took 3-47 for the Proteas.
Opener Morne van Wyk (44) was Kallis' main support, while Vernon Philander (17 not out) hit the winning runs.
Kallis oversaw the successful chase after an opening stand of 56 was broken when AB de Villiers was caught by wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik off the bowling of RP Singh for 24.
Van Wyk went six short of a half-century when he played across Piyush Chawla's (3-47) leg-spin and dollied a leading edge to cover.
And Herschelle Gibbs also fell to the teenager, misjudging the turn to be bowled through the gate after making just five.
Off-spinner Ramesh Powar had JP Duminy (11) mis-sweeping straight into the hands of deep square-leg before Zaheer Khan trapped Mark Boucher lbw for 23.
Andrew Hall was next to fall, caught at extra-cover off Chawla for 16, to leave Kallis and Philander needing 53 more runs for victory.
But Kallis kept his cool to finish with six fours from 116 balls, while Philander it was who struck Yuvraj Singh for the winning four over long-off.
Tendulkar had earlier underpinned the India innings, after his team were put in on a cold and overcast morning.
The opener shared a stand of 158 in 32 overs with his captain Dravid - and by the time he departed, the world's leading ODI runscorer was just 50 short of becoming the first to reach 15,000.
Tendulkar and Dravid came together after left-handers Sourav Ganguly and Gautam Gambhir had both gone cheaply to the new ball.
Ganguly lasted until the eighth over before he was caught behind attempting a drive off Nel after making 13.
Gambhir fell for a duck to the same bowler, playing away from his body and edging to Kallis in the slips.
From 181-2 with 10 overs to go, India lost both Tendulkar and Dravid and missed out on a significant total.
Dravid was yorked by Nel before Tendulkar took on the arm of Van Wyk and was just short of his ground as he pushed for an unwise second run and what would have been his 42nd one-day ton.
Yuvraj Singh (13) holed out to mid-on, but some late improvisation from Dinesh Karthik (19) , including the only six of the innings, made sure of a testing total.
