Ganguly was hit by a Nantie Hayward bouncer but recovered |
Sourav Ganguly rolled back the years with an innings that helped rescue India's position in their warm-up match against a Rest of South Africa XI. With the first Test around the corner and captain Rahul Dravid a fitness doubt, Ganguly is in line for a recall.
And he did his cause no damage by hitting 83 in nearly four hours after Morne Morkel had reduced India to 69-5.
Morkel, 22, a highly-rated fast bowler, dismissed Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Dhoni.
Ganguly put on 139 with all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who topped his own effort with a sparkling innings of 111 not out.
And Harbhajan Singh's 47 took India to 316-7 on day one of four, a tremendous recovery given their early difficulties.
