South Africa to try Adams again

Paul Adams is back in the Test frame for South Africa
South Africa have recalled Paul Adams to their Test squad some two-and-a-half years after his last appearance.

Adams, 29, with 134 wickets from 45 Tests, is likely to fight it out with Nicky Boje for the spin-bowling spot.

India's batsmen did not find Adams too taxing in a tour match at Potchefstroom on Thursday, where his nine wicketless overs were smashed for 54 runs.

There are no other surprises in the 15-man squad, which the selectors expect to keep for all three Tests.

Explaining the decision to give Adams another chance, chief selector Haroon Lorgat said: "Paul is capable as a strike bowler and, in the absence of obvious alternatives, we want to give ourselves the opportunity of looking at him in building our Test squad.

"It will be up to Paul to show us that he can still do the job."

There are fitness concerns about seam bowlers Andre Nel and Dale Steyn and all-rounder Andrew Hall, but all three are expected to recover in time.

"Andrew Hall's injury that he sustained in the fourth ODI in Port Elizabeth, has forced the medical staff to rest him until the end of the week when an assessment on his right knee and quad will be made.

"Should all be well, he will then start exercising this weekend. Andrew will be monitored when the Test squad assembles next week. He is currently wearing a compression sock to help reduce the acute swelling of his leg," said physio Shane Jabaar.

"Andre Nel's right index finger that was injured during fielding practice in the previous week, was x-rayed as a precaution to determine whether the distal joint on the finger had perhaps sustained a chip fracture too.

"The x-rays were negative for any bony injury and it was concluded that in addition to the soft tissue injury to his finger, he also had bone bruising that was causing the excessive pain he was experiencing after the last ODI in Centurion.

"Dale Steyn is making good progress with the left thigh strain injury he sustained. He is in the final stages of rehabilitation and should be OK to bowl this weekend," Jabaar added.

Squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Jacques Kallis, Paul Adams, Hashim Amla, Nicky Boje, Mark Boucher (wk), AB de Villiers, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Hall, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Shaun Pollock, Ashwell Prince, Jacques Rudolph, Dale Steyn.
