Kallis puts Indians to the sword
Second one-day international, Durban: South Africa 248-8 beat India 91 all out

Jacques Kallis hit a commanding century and then took three wickets as South Africa beat India by 157 runs in the second one-day international in Durban.

Kallis struck an unbeaten 119 from 160 balls as the home side posted 248-8 after winning the toss, with only AB de Villiers (41) adding decent support.

The hosts' pace attack then took over as India fell from 82-4 to 91 all out.

Andre Nel (4-13) was the pick of the attack, while Sachin Tendulkar (35) top-scored in a dire batting display.

India's cause was not helped by the fact that they had to chase the total under floodlights without opener Virender Sehwag, who has a sore finger.

And Kallis ensured their chase would not be an easy one as he held the hosts' innings together batting first, despite wickets falling around him in seaming conditions.

Munaf Patel, Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar all took two wickets but they could not restrict the Proteas.

India debutant Wasim Jaffer was then bowled by Pollock in the first over of the tourists' reply before the world's number one one-day bowler also removed Mohammed Kaif.

After a stand of just 23 between Tendulkar and skipper Rahul Dravid, India capitulated with Nel's eight overs and Kallis' 3-3 inspiring South Africa to victory and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

"We know we can play better than this and it's a matter of proving it," India captain Rahul Dravid said afterwards.

"Some of our shot selection against the fast bowlers is something we need to look at before we go into the next game.

"It's been agreed that if we want to be competitive in conditions like this then we've got to prepare wickets like this in our domestic tournaments."

Kallis, meanwhile, was delighted with his first one-day century for over two years.

"It wasn't a free-scoring wicket, it needed someone to bat through the innings and for someone to bat around him.

"That's what we did. I backed my experience to hang in there, and we made a good score," he commented.
