The final in Malaysia takes place on September 24 |
Australia plan to use the triangular series with West Indies and India in Malaysia this month to experiment with new players and different combinations. Wicket-keeper and dynamic batsman Adam Gilchrist is rested so English county players Mark Cosgrove and Phil Jaques are in line to open the innings.
"The whole idea of this series is to give everyone a couple of games," said captain Ricky Ponting.
Australia have Glenn McGrath back and begin against the Windies on Tuesday.
Ponting is delighted to welcome back his seam stalwart McGrath, who has been out of the team since January to spend time with his wife in her recuperation from cancer.
McGrath, who will be 37 in February, has taken 331 wickets in 221 one-day internationals but given his long absence, Ponting is keen to give him some match practice ahead of the Champions Trophy in India next month.
"He feels 25 again," Ponting said. "I think we'll try and give Glenn as much bowling as we can, he's one that's thrived with lots of bowling over the years."
The captain is also confident that Simon Katich will cement his place at the top of the order, having failed to reach fifty in three matches in Bangladesh.
"He went into his shell a little bit but I think we started to see the real Simon katich come out," Ponting observed. "With him being a bit more confident with his position in the side I think we're going to see a better player."
