Taylor played 104 Test for Australia, 50 of them as captain |
Former Australia captain Mark Taylor is to lead the search for a new national team coach. Taylor will chair a five-man panel who have been given the task of finding the right replacement for John Buchanan.
"The recommendation of a replacement coach will be one of the most important decisions Cricket Australia needs to make in the next 12 months," he said.
Buchanan, 53, will leave his job at the end of next year's World Cup after eight years in charge.
During that time, he has guided Australia to 24 Test series wins and victory in the 2003 World Cup final.
There is no shortage of potential candidates for the panel to consider.
They include Tom Moody, Greg Chappell and Dav Whatmore, who are currently coaching the Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh teams, and the head of Australia's Centre of Excellence, Tim Nielsen.
The selection panel, which also includes another former skipper, Allan Border, and Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland, does not as yet have a timetable for making an appointment.
"The committee will discuss in the next few weeks the process it will use and the criteria it will set for the appointment," Taylor added.
