Harbhajan defends Sabina surface

Harbhajan ripped through the Windies in devastating fashion
Harbhajan Singh has defended the Sabina Park pitch despite seeing 26 wickets fall on the first two days of the final Test between West Indies and India.

The off-spinner took 5-13 to skittle the hosts for 100 before India reached 128-6, giving them a lead of 225.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with the wicket. This is the best we've had in the series," Harbhajan insisted.

"There's something in it for the quick bowlers and spinners, and if batsmen are good enough they are getting runs."

Windies coach Bennett King agreed, although he said there were some pitfalls.

"Some balls are kicking up around shoulder height from just short of a good length and some are keeping a little bit low," he explained.

"But you get out of the pitch what you put in. It's a challenge for the batters but players who are committed can make scores as Rahul Dravid has shown."

Harbhajan ripped through the Windies in a devastating spell which lasted only 27 balls.

But he said he had not been doing anything differently: "I didn't bowl any magic balls, I just bowled the same way I've been bowling in the last eight years.

"Sometimes in 50 overs you get one wicket and sometimes you bowl four-and-a-half and get five.

We have players who on their day can bat on most surfaces - hopefully their day will come when we bat

"You just have to keep working hard and have faith in your ability. You will get wickets if you bowl good balls and that's what I've been trying to do."

Dravid's unbeaten 62 has put the tourists in a strong position and Harbhajan believes they can wrap up victory if they can eke out some more runs on day three.

"It's not going to be easy to get them out again because they will be up for the challenge," he added.

"You can't say anything's safe in cricket - we've seen teams chasing 400 to win.

"But it's a great chance to win the series and I'm sure if we bowl and field well we will win this Test."

King was left to lament a dismal batting collapse and knows his side will have to up their game considerably to avoid defeat.

"We just folded and we've got to make a greater effort to get through the new ball in the second innings," the Australian added.

"It did too much damage to us and we've got to try to cope with the wicket as best we can early on and when the spinners start.

"It's going to be important in the first hour to get some momentum and get ourselves into bat before the score blows out too much.

"We have players who on their day can bat on most surfaces - hopefully their day will come when it's our turn to bat."
