The Scots totalled 203-8 off 50 overs before reducing the tourists to 93-5 and although they ended up losing by five wickets, Woolmer was impressed.

"Scotland have come a long, long way," the Pakistan coach said.

"Their fielding is sharp, the bowling was pretty good and I've noticed they've beaten a few counties. It's a good omen for Scottish cricket."

Ryan Watson, who captained the Scots in the absence of the injured Craig Wright, was the mainstay of his side's effort with a fine innings of 80.

He was proud of their performance in pushing a strong Pakistan side hard and believes it bodes well for their World Cup campaign in the Caribbean next year.

"The only low point of the match was that we didn't win it. The worst thing that could have happened for Scottish cricket was that we would go out and get flogged," he explained.

"With a bit of hard work over the winter we are going to get a lot better - there's a lot of room for improvement which can only augur well for the future."

In the end Pakistan were guided home by a composed knock of 83 from Mohammad Yousuf and he felt the match had been a good workout for the tourists ahead of their Test and one-day series against England.

"It was a very good batting pitch and very good atmosphere with the sunshine and it was very enjoyable," he said.
