West Indies produced a strong bowling display to restrict India to 235-9 at stumps on day one of the first Test. All-rounder Dwayne Bravo claimed 4-37 and Corey Collymore 3-27 as India struggled after electing to bat.
Eight batsmen reached double figures for the tourists but none of them could go on to play a major innings and Rahul Dravid's 49 was the top score.
India were 180-7 but Sri Sreesanth and Anil Kumble boosted the total by adding 47 for the eighth wicket.
And although Kumble was bowled by Bravo for 21, Sreesanth survived to the close on 24 not out, with last man Munaf Patel yet to open his account.
India sprang a surprise at the start by leaving out Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh and giving a debut to seam bowler VRV Singh.
Dravid's decision to bat after winning the toss in his 100th Test meant it was up to Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer to see off the new ball and try and lay the foundation for a sizeable score.

Their hopes of doing so were short-lived, however, as Jaffer managed only a single before he was caught behind off Fidel Edwards.
Sehwag played positively as always, collecting seven boundaries in his 36 as India passed 50 in the 10th over.
But he departed as Collymore's opening delivery induced an edge to Lara at second slip and VVS Laxman followed for 29 shortly before lunch when he was caught behind off Bravo.

Dravid and Yuvraj Singh put on 54 but wrist spinner Dave Mohammed, playing his first Test for two years, made a vital breakthrough when he bowled Yuvraj for 23 as he played across the line.
India were 144-4 at tea and lost Mohammed Kaif for 13 early in the final session when Bravo found the inside edge of his bat and keeper Denesh Ramdin made no mistake.
Lara reached another landmark in his long Test career when he took his 150th catch in Tests to remove Mahendra Dhoni for 19 off Collymore and again showed a safe pair of hands to end Dravid's long vigil two overs later.
Sreesanth and Kumble held West Indies up with some determined batting but the home side ended on a high note as Bravo picked up the wickets of Kumble and newcomer Singh, the latter making two from eight balls before he was caught by Ramnaresh Sarwan at extra cover.
