Windies claim morale-boosting win
One-day international, Auckland: New Zealand 233 (49.3 overs) v West Indies 234-7 (49.4 overs)

Dwayne Smith

A quickfire seventh-wicket stand from Denesh Ramdin and Wavell Hinds guided West Indies to a consolation win in the final one-day game with New Zealand.

The Windies lost the first four matches of the series but chased down a target of 234 with just two balls to spare.

They looked in trouble on 175-6 with less than eight overs left but Hinds (40no from 41) balls and Ramdin (38 from 26) turned the game.

Earlier Dwayne Smith had taken 5-45 as New Zealand were bowled out for 233.

Black Caps skipper Stephen Fleming won the toss and chose to bat first but the hosts lost Lou Vincent and Nathan Astle to the new ball.

But Scott Styris led the recovery with 90 off 114 balls before giving Smith, whose figures represented his best one-day haul, a return catch in the penultimate over.

Fleming (32) and Ross Taylor (31 off 29 balls) were the other main contributors to the New Zealand total, while Fidel Edwards and Ian Bradshaw supported Smith by taking two wickets each.

The tourists' reply was hampered by the early loss of Chris Gayle for two, and they looked to be heading to another defeat when Smith departed in the 28th over to leave his team meandering on 98-4.

However, Dwayne Bravo (38) and captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul (41) increased the pace and provided the platform for Hinds and Ramdin to put victory in sight with a partnership of 58.

Wicketkeeper Ramdin gave Shane Bond his third wicket with the scores level and three balls remaining but the batsman crossed and Hinds took a single from the next ball to seal victory.

The two sides meet again in Auckland on Thursday for the first of three Tests.
