We just need to try and persevere Tom Moody

Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody said the luck was not with his team as England piled on the runs on the first day at Lord's.

England closed on 318-3 with Marcus Trescothick making 106 and Alastair Cook hitting 89 on his home debut.

But Sri Lanka were hard done by with all their lbw appeals turned down by umpires Rudi Koertzen and Aleem Dar.

Moody said: "Not everything went our way. It would have been nice if we had got a few nicks that carried and one less no-ball would have been better."

But the Australian refused to be drawn into the lbws, three of which could have been given out on another day.

He said: "The lbw decisions are not for me to comment on. It's all part of the game. But it could have been a different scoreline at the end of the day."

Moody said it was a good toss for England to win although he believed the wicket would stay flat for the remainder of the match.

"We were fully aware it was going to be a good batting wicket. We just need to try and persevere."

Moody revealed Sanath Jayasuriya will arrive in England in the next few days.

But the coach has not had chance to speak to the selectors about the former captain's possible u-turn about retiring from Test cricket.

He added: "He has had some deep thoughts about his decision to retire. If he is fit and wants to play it can't be a bad thing can it? He can be a devastating player.
