India lost their first Test series to Pakistan for 19 years after slumping to a 341-run defeat in the deciding third and final Test in Karachi.

BBC Sport looks at the players who shone despite the team's failures, and the ones looking nervously over their shoulders.

Rahul Dravid (captain): 7

Scored freely in the first two Tests, but in the crunch game in Karachi, his two innings occupied a combined 16 balls. He also struggled to motivate the bowlers throughout.

Virender Sehwag: 7 A stirring 254 in the first Test in Lahore showcased the abundant talents of India's opener but he failed to contribute from that point onwards. Perhaps unsettled by never knowing who his partner would be.

VVS Laxman: 6 Having failed to cash in fully on the excellent batting decks early on, it was no surprise when Laxman registered double failures in Lahore. His place in the side is under pressure.

Sachin Tendulkar: 5 A miserable series for the man idolised by millions, though it did not help him that he had come to the crease only once before the Karachi Test. A best score of 26 would never have been predicted.

Sourav Ganguly: 6 His batting was not required in Lahore and he was dropped for the second Test in Faisalabad. With the pressure on in Karachi, two scores in the 30s will add to the confusion surrounding his long-term future.

Mahendra Dhoni: 7 His 148 in Faisalabad, scored at an important time, made that game safe. Like most of the side, he struggled in Karachi and his wicket-keeping is no more than capable - prone to the odd error.

Yuvraj Singh: 7 After two moderate scores, he needed his century on the final day of the series to cement his place, but he rode his luck during that innings of 122.

Irfan Pathan: 8 Took a brilliant 5-61 on the first day in Karachi - including that extraordinary first over hat-trick - and also hit an impressive 134 runs at an average of 44.66

Harbhajan Singh: 5 Once or twice he may have been unlucky with lbw shouts, but the reality is that the iconic off-spinner was hit for 355 runs in the first two Tests and was wicketless. Dropped for Karachi.

Zaheer Khan: 7 The only bowler in the series to take 10 wickets, Zaheer plugged away gamely and showed enough consistency to win back his place in the one-day squad.

Anil Kumble: 5 Would have been infuriated by conditions in the first two Tests, but should have done better in Pakistan's second innings in Karachi when the pitch was taking turn.

Rudra Pratap Singh: 7 The young left-arm seamer made his debut in Faisalabad and was impressive in first innings figures of 4-89 while his more experienced collagues struggled. Shows definite potential.

Ajit Agarkar: 6 Only played in Lahore, and proved the most expensive of all India's regular bowlers through the series, but had the consolation of taking two wickets.
