Jayasuriya was not in the original Sri Lanka squad

Sanath Jayasuriya returned from injury with a century, inspiring Sri Lanka to their second win of the VB Series - a 51-run success against Australia.

In ideal batting conditions, Jayasuriya struck 10 fours and four sixes in 114 from 96 balls, sharing 163 with Kumar Sangakkara (78) in a total of 309-7.

Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds added 73 in 10 overs to put the home side in touch but both fell within five balls.

Malinga Bandara captured two wickets in the final over to finish with 4-58.

Jayasuriya missed the opening games with a shoulder injury, aggravated when he slipped in a shower in New Zealand.

He rejoined the team in Sydney only two days ago but was in sufficient form to post his 19th one-day century, featuring a six off pace demon Brett Lee.

The run fest finally ended when a tired Jayasuriya was stumped by wicket-keeper Brad Haddin while trying to launch wrist-spinner Brad Hogg.

With Sangakkara and Jayasuriya at the crease, Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting was short of solutions.

He substituted newcomer Brett Dorey, who had been battered for 35 runs off four overs, and brought on super-sub Hogg.

Hogg managed to stem the flood of boundaries but the duo continued to pound the bowling of James Hopes, who conceded three sixes to Jayasuriya for figures of 0-65 in six overs.

Sangakkara was eventually caught and bowled by Symonds but Mahela Jayawardene joined the fray, hitting 56 in a rapid-fire 48-ball innings.

The total was Sri Lanka's second-highest against Australia, behind their 349-9 at the same ground on their last visit three years ago.

Australia replaced Phil Jaques, who scored 94 on debut against South Africa on Friday, as Simon Katich returned from a groin injury while Nathan Bracken came in for Glenn McGrath.

Their reply began in tentative fashion when the in-form Damien Martyn was dismissed for only eight in the fifth over.

The key wicket of Ponting was claimed in the 11th over, the skipper caught high at point by a juggling Muttiah Muralitharan having hit two fours in his 13.

Clarke and Symonds had worked their side back into a challenging position, with 126 needed from 14.2 overs, when a mix-up resulted in a vital breakthrough.

Clarke cut Chaminda Vaas firmly to point and set off for a run, but Tillakaratne Dilshan swooped like a gazelle to field and throw in to the keeper.

A lack of communication saw both batsmen at the bowler's end and it was Symonds who made a fruitless attempt to get back, having hit two fours and the only six of the innings, a massive strike over long-off against Jayasuriya.

In the next over Clarke lofted Bandara to Muralitharan 15 yards in from the extra-cover boundary, after top-scoring with 67 from 70 balls.
