Steyn has played two one-day internationals for South Africa |
Fast bowler Dale Steyn will replace Andre Nel in South Africa's squad for the rest of the VB Series in Australia. Nel is suffering from a foot injury which will keep him out of action for up to a month.
Steyn won the call after the selectors decided they wanted fellow fast bowler Makhaya Ntini to take more time to recover from hamstring problems.
Ntini was passed fit but selectors want him to be fully fit for the home Test series against Australia in February.
The convenor of the national selectors, Haroon Lorgat, said: "Makhaya underwent his fitness test and although he passed fit we have decided after careful consideration not to subject him to the rigours of international cricket at this stage.
"He has made a wonderful recovery, but we would prefer to give him further rehabilitation."
Steyn, 22, has played three Test matches and two one-day internationals for South Africa before.
Lorgat added: "Dale's speed will add an extra option to our bowling attack if needed. He will also gain further valuable experience by being part of the Proteas set up again."
