As for Panesar and Blackwell, chairman of selectors David Graveney said England would not name a third spinner until they have checked on the fitness of Giles.

Graveney is keen to give the younger players a chance to establish themselves in England's one-day squad in India, hence Gough's omission.

"Liam Plunkett has made a promising start to his international career and is an emerging player with great potential," said Graveney.

"We believe Ian Bell's ability to bat in the top order will give us another option as we plan for the World Cup."

England have not yet confirmed whether all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will miss the third Test in Mumbai (Bombay) to attend the birth of his second child, due on 21 March.

England will be seeking to erase memories of their 2-0 series defeat in Pakistan late last year.
