Captain Graeme Smith has vowed South Africa will get revenge in the return series against Australia next month. The Aussies completed a 2-0 triumph by winning the third Test in Sydney but Smith's confidence has not been shaken.
Smith said: "When we get back home in front of our supporters, we're going to be confident, we're going to stand up and we're not going to back down.
"Certainly, when Australia come to South Africa it's going to be one of their toughest times ever."
Despite the margin of defeat, Smith insists his side were not outclassed and believes Australia's experience of winning tight matches was the difference between the teams.
"Looking back, we've had opportunities and we need to be a little bit more decisive when our opportunities arrive," he explained.
"A team like Australia has been dominant over the last few years and when they smell the kill, they take it - that's an area that we're looking to get to.
"Against any other team in the world we would have won this series. We dominated a large portion of this Test and throughout the series we've really dominated sessions.
"We still believe we can beat them, other teams think they can beat them. Credit to them, they've played the better cricket and got the better results."
Smith boldly set the Aussies 287 to win in 76 overs on day five and even though the hosts cruised to their target, he insisted it was a gamble worth taking for the good of his team and the sport in general.
"Cricket needs positive games, it doesn't need teams batting out and drawing games," he added.
"For us as a team, moving forward, we really need to be positive, it's the only way we can take South African cricket forward.
"Yes, we've lost but we've said throughout the game that the difference between 1-0 and 2-0 for us is nothing."
